In October 2023, Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s Fortuner continued its dominance in the full-size SUV segment by posting robust sales figures. The Fortuner achieved a domestic sales tally of 2,475 units, marking a YoY sales growth of 22% compared to the same period last year when it sold 2,031 units. The Toyota Fortuner has consistently led the sales charts in the full-size SUV category.

In contrast, the MG Gloster, despite entering the Indian market with several first-in-segment features, experienced fluctuating sales numbers. In October 2023, the Gloster recorded 247 unit sales, reflecting a YoY volume increase of 38%, up from 179 units in the corresponding period in the previous year.

Skoda Kodiaq: The Best German SUV

Following the MG Gloster, the Skoda Kodiaq secured the third position in the sales chart. The Kodiaq witnessed a significant YoY positive volume surge of 220%, with 176 units sold in October 2023 compared to 55 units in the same month the previous year. The Volkswagen Tiguan, which is expected to be replaced by the Tayron three-row SUV in India, recorded a total of 98 units in October 2023, reflecting an 18% YoY growth from 83 units in October 2022.

The Jeep Meridian rounded up the top five positions with 109 units sold in October 2023. However, the model experienced a YoY negative sales growth of 73%, down from 404 units in the same period in 2022.

Looking ahead, the full-size SUV segment is anticipated to see increased activity over the next few years, especially with the long-awaited next-generation Toyota Fortuner and the evolutionary changes introduced in the second-generation Skoda Kodiaq and new Volkswagen Tiguan, both based on the updated MQB-EVO architecture with multiple powertrain options available in overseas markets.
